Ski Amis Launch Learn to Ski – 25 March 2017 – La Tania, Three Valleys

Catered chalet company, Ski Amis, has launched a learn-to-ski week in La Tania this coming March.

Spring is a great time to learn – the slopes are quieter, the snow is good and the days are longer. The resort of La Tania is the perfect place to learn to ski, with nursery slopes within easy access and stunning long tree-lined runs.

“We all have a friend or family member that would love to try out skiing, but is worried about being the only one who can’t stay upright. We created this package deal to bring together like-minded people who are all in the same boat” said Chris Woodbridge-Cox, Commercial Director of Ski Amis.

“When you’re learning in a group, things don’t seem so daunting. We are sure this week is going to be a huge success and all of our guests will head home loving skiing as much as we love skiing”

The week is aimed at adults who have never skied before, and will provide guests with a great introduction to this fantastic sport.

Here’s what’s included:

  • Transfers from and to Geneva, Grenoble or Chambery Airport
  • 7 nights ‘chalet board’ in Chalet Christine, La Tania
  • 6 day local area lift pass (Courchevel and La Tania – 150km of pistes)
  • 6 days of morning lessons with an English speaking ESF instructor (Max 8 per group)
  • Ski, boot and helmet hire (Silver Evolution)

Price: £899.00 p.p. based on 2 adults sharing a twin room with en-suite shower/wc.

To find out more contact Ski Amis through their chalet page here

Optional:

This price includes delivery to and collection from your home, and you can even try the kit on for free beforehand to ensure you get a good fit.

Where to ski at half term?

A family ski holiday can be one of the most memorable and rewarding experiences that you can give your children.  A break from the games consoles and TV to experience the stunning scenery and mountain air in their lungs that you simply can’t find at home in the UK. Taking a ski holiday can also be a great physical workout, but in a fun way.  Certainly more healthy than the kids playing Minecraft while eating Doritos.

A family ski holiday is also a great way to bring everyone closer together, away from the daily stress of work or school.  A chance to unwind without the usual distractions of modern family life.

Having said all this, as parents we are very limited to when we can book a ski holiday.  Unless you are a school governor or Head Teacher (so it seems!), we are not allowed to take our children out of school for a ski holiday and so we’re forced to go in school Holiday time.  Punishment for disobeying this rule is a heavy fine and receiving 10 lashes of the cat ‘o nine tails and banged up in the London Dungeon (okay - so that was a slight exaggeration, but you do get my point.)

Half Term is the obvious choice of the holidays as it is at the peak of the ski season so greater odds of snow.  Having made that choice, the next one is where to go?

The French Alps is the most popular destination for the Brits and that is not likely to change any time soon.  The French resorts are mostly easy to get to whether by air, coach, train or car, offer well organised ski schools, and great facilities.  Most of the French Ski Resorts have invested heavily over the last few years and many have super-fast ski lifts, fantastic snow making facilities and demonstrate a very slick and well run operation.

Morzine

Morzine is one of the easiest and quickest ski resorts you can get to from the UK.  With a short flight from Gatwick to Geneva, followed by an airport transfer that is around one and a half hours, I can go from sitting in the airport lounge to enjoying a drink at my hotel/chalet in Morzine in no time at all.

Unlike a lot of the purpose built ski resorts that are scattered across the Alps, Morzine has an authentic feel to it and has great character.  It is also great value for money and although an ever-increasingly popular resort to go to, Morzine has not succumbed to mass commercialism and remains very affordable for a family on a budget.

There is a good choice of British or French run ski schools in Morzine, including the popular Club Des Piou Piou for the little ‘uns  (from 3 years old) which is organised by the ESF school. There is a good choice of gentle and well sheltered slopes for the kids to progress on at their own pace. There are also plenty of childcare nursery options, so you can go and spend a few hours enjoying the mountains.

Morzine is part of the Portes Soleil linked area, and with easy access to the Les Gets and Avoriaz, the area is vast!  There is something for everyone with runs for all abilities and equally enjoyable for snowboarders as well as skiers.

Overall, Morzine is fantastic for a family ski holiday that will not break the bank.

Paradiski

The linking of the two popular resorts of Les Arcs and La Plagne via the impressive Vanoise Express (a super-fast double decker Gondola that can carry 200 people) created Paradiski, one of the biggest ski areas in the world.

Both La Plagne and Les Arcs are fantastic for families with their purpose built ‘ski in, ski out’ resorts - perfect for ease of access.  What they both lack in the way of authentic village charm and charisma, these resorts make up for in being built for purpose.

There is a good choice of ski schools with beginner slopes, moving ‘magic’ carpets and safe zones.  There are also plenty of other activities to keep the whole family amused with climbing walls, toboggans and the chance to speed down on an Olympic Bobsleigh run.

Mille 8 is a new and exciting family entertainment and leisure development on the slopes.  Features include a Discovery Piste themed ski track through trees that has been designed to be an educational but fun experience for the whole family to enjoy.  There is also a Sledge Run, a kids play area, large restaurant, swimming pools, and for the more advanced, freestyle runs.

Mille 8 cost 36 million Euros to develop and is an ambitious vision of creating experiences for the whole family to enjoy.

Meribel (Brides Les Bains)

If you don't want to fly then travelling by luxury coach would be a more affordable alternative.  Not only that, travelling through the night will free up some more slope time to enjoy!

If you do wish to travel by coach then you should consider Brides Les Bains, sited below the resort of Meribel, a quiet town that is ideal for families to use as a base to access the magnificent Trois Vallées ski area.

Meribel is only a 25 minute Gondola ride away and is perfectly central to explore the Trois Vallées.  Meribel is also great for beginners and families with gentle slopes including a long, wide green slope run at the Altiport.  There is also an impressive choice of ski schools to choose from at Meribel, many of them British run.

For those who are beginners, it may be more cost efficient to stick to the local area (Meribel) ski lift pass.  Of course, if you are more ambitious then the Trois Vallées offers endless terrain to explore.

As you might expect from one of the world’s top ski resorts, Meribel can be a little pricey, but Brides Les Bains is a lot more reasonable and although quiet, has plenty of bars and restaurants to choose from.

Overall, travelling to Brides Les Bains by coach is a great way for a family to experience the impressive Trois Vallées area and in particular Meribel, without paying the usual extortionate prices usually expected from the neighboring resorts.

Flexible Catering for your Ski Accommodation!

This is a guest blog by Chez Toi.

So everyone who has ever skied knows about the traditional ‘Catered Chalet’ holiday which has been around for decades.  You probably also know that you can stay in self-catered accommodation, be it an apartment or chalet which is rented as a whole.  But did you know that you can have the best of both worlds?  That’s right, in a few selected ski resorts you can now have the luxury of a catered chalet, combined with the freedom and flexibility of renting your own self-catered propertyMorzine and Les Gets are two of the these ski resorts.

Why not just book a package holiday?

In recent years people have started to look at options to tailor make their own ski holidays.  Of course this has been helped along by the advent of the ‘budget airline’.  The likes of Easyjet and Ryanair now supply airports across the Alps and from many regional UK airports, making it easy and cheap to travel.  Resorts such as Morzine, Les Gets and Chamonix benefit from being situated close to Geneva airport.  This means short transfer times and plenty of well priced travel options available.

With more and more people booking their holidays piece by piece on the internet, there are now so many different types of holiday available in these resorts.  Individuals based in these ski areas have answered the demand for more flexibility and it is now possible to book pretty much everything before you arrive in resort.  From different catering options, to skis delivered to your chalet, to private ski lessons, childcare, pre-booked lift passes and so much more.

So how does flexible catering work?

Flexible catering has come about as the result of people demanding more choice between dining options in resort.  Of course many people are happy with the six nights catering that you receive as standard during a one week chalet holiday.  And some are still happy to go to the local supermarket and cook for themselves for the week.  However a growing number of people are looking for a mixture of both.  Perhaps you would like someone to cook for you on three evenings, eat out in a local restaurant for two and buy a frozen pizza for the other two.  Well now this is not a problem.

At Chez Toi we aim to provide the catering package to suit you, in Morzine and Les Gets.  We can provide a one off evening meal- maybe for a special occasion, or up to a full week fully catered package.  Our chefs are flexible in what they offer and we will liaise with you before arrival in resort to agree menus.  We will come to your chalet or apartment at a pre-agreed time to prepare and serve your meal.  And the best part is we will clean up the kitchen and do the dishes afterwards so you won’t need to lift a finger!

For more information about the different packages on offer please take a look at our website or contact us by email.

New Ski Lift in Morzine

This is a guest blog from Tim Maitland from The Tasty Ski Company

The New Le Pleney Lift

With less than two months to go before the ski season begins we are all waiting with baited breath for resort life to kick back into action. Lots of holiday makers are looking forward to returning to their favourite spots, and also to see what is new in their top resorts. This has never been more true for Morzine with the construction of the new Le Pleney lift. The old gondola has been completely changed with a brand spanking new cable car that accesses both the Morzine and Les Gets ski areas. So how does this change the Portes du Soleil skiing for winter 2013/14?

Firstly the new gondola will provide an improved capacity and greater speed for anyone who uses it. Le Pleney lift is the main lift going out of Morzine towards Les Gets and also for all the skiing that heads back into Morzine town from Le Pleney side. It is possibly the busiest lift in the whole of the Portes du Soleil, particularly for holiday makers staying in Morzine who do not purchase a ski pass for Avoriaz and beyond. This is good news for families staying in Morzine, as the short trip over to the Les Gets skiing is often very popular.

Secondly the construction of the new gondola is an example of the continued development of Morzine as a skiing destination. It is one of the few established french ski resorts that still has a lot of area that can still be developed. This is in contrast to other large french resorts like Val d’Isere, Chamonix and The Three Valleys that are increasingly short of space. This results in lots of new accommodation popping up every year, and allows Morzine to be consistently more affordable than the other large alpine ski resorts.

And finally we don’t want to forget the mountain bikers! Le Pleney gondola was not in use for summer 2013 much to the frustration of downhill mountain bikers and walkers. However from 2014 there will be a faster service and larger capacity during the summer which can only be a good thing for the MTB enthusiasts!

The Tasty Ski Company run chalets in Morzine and Morillon and Tim will be writing some guest blogs through the season about food and will include some recipes!  Yum! Looking forward to those! grin

Driving Home for Christmas

'So I sing for you
Though you can't hear me
When I get through
And feel you near me
I am driving home for Christmas
Driving home for Christmas
With a thousand memories'

Chris Rea once sang!!

I wasn’t singing as we boarded the Eurotunnel and set out on our journey to the Alps but I was very excited!  The early snow reports had been good and although the Alps aren’t strictly home I have spent 12 of the last 14 Christmases in the snow and they certainly have a thousand (and more) memories!

So trying not to jump up and down in the driver’s seat, we were soon cruising down the empty French motorway to our stop over for the night.

Booked only a couple of days before through one of the large hotel booking sites, we had struck lucky with La Maison Rouge in Noeux les Mines.  A perfect stopping point if you are driving to or from the Alps, just an hour from Calais and minutes from the A26.  And it’s not just a great location - the hotel is welcoming, has a lovely restaurant, fabulous food and a bar to sit in and relax after dinner.

With probably the largest Christmas baubles I have ever seen and a lingerie cupboard (sadly locked – and yes we did try the door! wink ), a comfortable bed and a great choice for breakfast what more could you want? However we were soon on the way again and had just an easy seven hour drive to The Alps to go.

Er……except it wasn’t that easy as it rained the whole way and made the journey an hour or two longer than expected – lots of spray and an extra couple of rest stops didn’t dampen the excitement and we were soon driving up the hill into Les Carroz with snow on the ground and more forecast. Excited and some more memories to make!

I have driven this route lots of times and although this wasn’t the easiest of journeys I would really recommend driving as an option. It is much easier to drive on French motorways than in the UK, the volume of traffic is far less, lots of service areas and several places to break up the journey – treat it as part of the holiday and enjoy it!

However you’re planning to get to the slopes this season, I wish you a safe, easy journey and plenty of the white stuff when you arrive.

It’s looking good so far!
